Parklets Coming to Washington Avenue Miami Beach Soon

– In an Effort to Energize and Reinvent the Public Realm –

Miami Beach, FL: Today, the Miami Beach City Commission approved a pilot program for Washington Avenue to allow parklets a small park, plaza or creative public space that is physically installed in an on-street parking space to enhance streetscapes.

“The parklet pilot program provides a path for our Washington Avenue businesses to take individual actions in the development and beautification of our city’s public realm,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy L. Morales.

“It also reflects our commitment to encourage bicycle and pedestrian-friendly streets.”

With 25 percent of Miami Beach’s land area serving as public rights-of-ways, parklets promote a low-cost, easily implementable approach to improving public space by widening sidewalks and providing amenities, including sidewalk cafes and landscaping.

Parklets for this pilot program will be permitted on both sides of Washington Avenue from 6 Street to Lincoln Road and must adhere to strict design guidelines and approval.
