Ricky Report April 2019
The long-awaited beach walk spanning from 3rd Street to 5th Street is complete! Besides improving pedestrian connectivity, the project removed invasive vegetation and strengthened our dune system with native plant species. Walkers and cyclists will rejoice once more when the beach walk section spanning between 47th Street to 53rd Street is completed next month. The on-grade paver pathway from 24th Street to 45th Street and the portion between 79th Street to 87th Street are expected to be completed in June 2020 and September 2020, respectively, thanks to the passage of the GO Bond.
About six months ago I was approached by a group of concerned millennials whose voices were not being heard by City Hall. Together we worked to establish the City’s new Next Generation Council. They had their first meeting in February and they are inspired to start tackling critical issues like sea-level rise, affordable housing, mass transit, and more. The decisions we make as policymakers today have a long-lasting impact. It is vital that we receive input from the next generation when we make decisions that they will have to live with. This Council will give a voice to our youth and train the next generation of leaders.
The Lincoln Road BID and MB Walking Club graciously hosted me for walking office hours. Residents and stakeholders had an opportunity to engage with me and each other to discuss important topics on the City Commission agenda outside of the typical office setting. The conversations were stimulating and the company was second to none. A big thank you to Starbucks, which surprised the group with free coffee and pastries. We hope you can join us for the next one!
The City of Miami Beach values business development and innovation. Recently, we created a new pop-up special event permit that will enable entrepreneurs to launch a temporary business in vacant storefronts in a straightforward manner. These pioneering businesses will bring an added vibrancy to our streets! Pop-up permits can be issued for a maximum of 90 days and cost as little as $250. If you ever wanted to test out your business idea – NOW is your time!
